Oxidized bitumen is produced through either continuous or staggered blowing processes. Heated penetration-grade bitumen is blown with air in a controlled environment to control its oil content as it oxidizes. Different grades for specific applications are produced and designated by two numbers that indicate the mid-point of their softening point and penetration ranges.
Blown grade bitumen is widely used in various applications, including as an anti-slip compound in the piling industry, for the manufacturing of roofing felts and sound dampening felts, as an undercarriage sealant in the automotive industry, and for electric cable joint protection, joint filling, sealant compounds, and many others.
Blown grade bitumen shall be broken up into small pieces and heated slowly to the application temperature of 220ºC to 230ºC.
